What Makes a Good Gaming Laptop?

Power and Portability

Gaming Consoles are winning in the gaming world, however if you are looking for the best graphics a computer is the way to go. Overall PCs are the preferred gaming method, however the need for portability has become a huge factor. We personally use to carry a huge custom built PCs to LAN parties, fast forward a few years and laptops are the preferred method.

Laptops have become lighter, more powerful, and less expensive. The idea of a gaming laptop under 1000 5 years ago that could handle mid to high graphics was hard to come by. Today it is common for laptops being used for multiple purposes like, work, college or just around the house that needs to be portable. If your computer can play newer games it will also be a great multi purpose machine. The matrix above has recommendations that will fit all of these needs.

Dedicated Graphics card (GPU)

Gaming Laptops Under 1000A dedicated graphics card is the difference from being able to run most games on medium to high settings VS being able to run games on low to medium settings. This is one of the most expensive items on gaming computers.

On a laptop stay away from integrated graphics cards as the graphics for your gaming will suffer. In this price range it should not be an issue, however, if you are on a tight budget and the graphics are secondary then an integrated graphics card will be the best way to go.

Dedicated graphics cards provide a better gaming experience also by

  • Improving FPS (Frames per second) creating a smoother, less choppy graphics
  • Being able to adjust the graphics settings higher for more clarity and realism, creating a better gaming experience.
  • Less strain on the system less resources being used for graphics more can be used for other tasks

Powerful ProcessorGaming Laptops Under 1000

Games are power and graphic hungry, especially on medium and high settings. The processor helps process what is going on and helps allocate resources as needed, almost like a  human brain. In this price rang looking for an Intel I5 and I7 processors would be ideal which why they are included in the matrix above. They provide the best bang for your buck and also will allow for other tasks to be done with ease. To help future proof your investment spend the money on the I7 processor if you can. The processor is near impossible to upgrade later.

Today it is common to have a minimum of 4 gigs of ram in a new laptop. However, if the laptops, primary focus is gaming 8 gigs of ram would be the minimum to start with.

Currently, DDR3 ram is your best bet as it is faster and uses less power than its predecessor DDR2, luckily most, if not all gaming laptops have this kind of ram. If you like to get nerdy and want to know more details, clickclick here for more info than you will ever want to know about DDR3 ram. According to Crucial DD4 memory is coming late 2013. By this time next year if not sooner it will be in computers within the price range we are looking at. As soon as they are, we will make sure they are added to our list!

Hard Drive Size and SpeedGaming Laptops Under 1000

Hard drives are what is used for long term storage. It is where your game installs are stored, it is where your documents, photos operation system and much more is stored. The minimum hard drive size to look for is 500 gigs.

Computer games are increasing in space. Huge games like World of Warcraft can easily take up 20-50 gigs of space It is not uncommon for games today to use 10-20 gigs of space and that number is only going to go up.

Hard drive speed will help improve performance by being able to read and write faster, which will increase boot/load times. A good starting point would be 5400 rpms. However, if you can move up to 7200 RPMs do it. For max read and writing take a look at solid state hard drives. I have one in my computer and it really fast. Be warned once you go SSD you will never go back! If possible get a laptop with 2 hard drive bays, 1 that is an SSD for your OS and games and one for storage.

Operating System

Gaming Laptops Under 1000The preferred and most dominate operating system is Windows 7 / Windows 8 here are a few reasons why

  • More Games like MANY MORE games. However Steam is out for Mac and Linux so there still may be hope for other operating systems in the future
  • Better graphics (hardware dependent)
  • Provide a better experience with better hardware for less money
  • Can apply patches modes etc.
  • Games run natively not in a wrapper or through an emulators / emulation

Screen Size

Screen size is very subjective, however, we will explain why you may want to consider a bigger screen (15-17 inch) is a good of gaming if it is the primary focus.

  • With bigger screens come higher resolutions which allow for more realistic as long as it is with a good processor and dedicated graphics card. A bigger screen also provides more on screen re estate for on screen action bars for games like World of Watercraft
  • Higher resolutions which allow for more detail and realism
  • More on screen real-estate while gaming

What Is Not Important For a Gaming Laptop?

Touch Screens: Yes Touch screens can be fun, but do not spend extra to get one. They will not enhance your gaming experience enough to justify spending money to get one.

Blue Ray Drive: Chances are this computer will also be used for media, however if unless you MUST HAVE a blue ray drive don’t spend the money to get one as they do not enhance your gaming experience.

Anything Above 16 Gigs Of Ram: Currently most, if not all games will run fine on 8 gigs of ram. If you are trying to buy a gaming laptop under 1000 at the time of writing this 16 gigs of ram would be an overkill and 32 gigs pointless you could spend your money elsewhere and upgrade ram later on if needed.

Windows 8: There is no advantage or disadvantage to having Windows 8 with your gaming laptop. If the computer comes with it great, if not don’t worry Windows 7 will work great.
